Nothing To Sneeze At

nothing to sneeze at _ image

A ride.

A young man landed and watched the world turn but he remained still. Very still, except for his hair and his beard. They both swinged wildly as the world went round. They got in his face and up his nose and the young man sneezed a lot. It’s hard to stay still when you sneeze.

The peoples and the animals and the plants got very upset. The world got noisy and wet and dirty and they just wanted it to go round. Maybe the spiders can trap him in a web, they said. So a million little spiders grabbed onto his hair and many millions of little legs started working there. But many millions of little legs make for a very itchy head and the young man’s hands started working there. His fingers scratched violently as the world went round. It looks as if it will snow forever.

What about the ants, they said. They could eat him very fast. So a million little ants climbed onto his head and two million little jaws started biting there. But two million little jaws make for a very angry man and the young man’s hands started swatting them. He stepped on the ants as the world went round. It looks as if the earth will quake forever.

They said: the wasps will do. They’ll sting him until there’s nothing he can do. So a million little wasps flew onto his head and a million little stingers started striking there. But a million little stingers make for a very gloomy man and the young man’s tears started drowning them. His tears dropped hard as the world went round. Now this wave will travel forever.

And so it was with many a beast and creature of the world until only the peoples remained. We’ll use our swords and take his head. That will teach him some manners, they said. So a million little men marched onto his head and a million little swords shone from up there. But a million little men make for a very serious man and the young man’s head started thinking then. He dried his tears as the world went round but their cries will echo forever.

The young man stood up and watched the world turn and he found himself alone. He remained very still except for his hair and his beard. They both swinged wildly as the world went round when he distinctly heard it pound. It got to his head and down his throat and it stayed there forever. It’s hard to stay still when it pounds.
